Four men are discussing in the main door of Sumur Gumuling, Pulo Kenanga, southwest of Ngasem Bird Market. There are waiting for the visitor who will give them around 5000 - 15.000 rupiah after telling the living story and the history.

Those lovely ladies are singers in shadow puppet performance. We call them sinden or pesinden. They sing all night long since the performance usually starts at 7pm and will be ended at around 5am in the morning.

The one wearing jasmine arrangement on her hair is the primadona, and she’s the youngest among them.

Let me introduce you to Dimas & Diajeng Jogja (Mr & Miss Jogja)

dated back to the 70’s when Jogja was predominated by bicycle as mode of transportation. it was a common habit among people of rural areas around Jogja to go to the city by bike every morning. labors went to their workplaces, and peasants transported crops and vegetables from their fields to big markets (we call it pasar) such as Pasar Kranggan and Pasar Beringharjo in the center of the city.

recently, bicycle has been replaced by motorbike as popular mode of transportation for daily activities. but still, we can find hundreds of them covering the left lane of streets every morning and afternoon, just a few minutes outside Jogja.

Some of them looks shy when I took their picture. Guess what.. there are 7 Abdi Magangan on the picture, and 5 of them have the same initial name “Yudo”. There are Mr. Yudoraharjo, Yudopradoto, Yudosaronto, Yudodinomo, Yudosarono, Mujiyono and Parjono.

When the other teenagers choose mall or other places to hang out, this couple choosed an art painting museum. Hmm.. feel so romantic, isn’t it?
